Bad Shirt Competition

The Gale Inn
(Tel 01706 645889)

'Soul Man' Ben Brierley provided live entertainment for the night singing lots of soul favourites and judging the competition.

The idea was to turn up in the most ill-fitting, gaudy, food stained, old-fashioned shirt you can find and pay £1 to enter the competition - and if yours was the worst on the night you'd win a £50 Ted Baker gift voucher (redeemable at Ted Baker or Ted Baker Woman). People turning up looking nice could find themselves fined £1 and being asked to change into one of a a sepcially provided range of awful shirts!

The result...

£57 was raised for the fund. The winner of the £50 voucher was a Gale Inn regular - Noel (who set off out for the evening without the intention of entering the competition!) But Ben Brierley got things livened up and selected him as the winner as he began the second half of the show.

Some guests (Maxine, Sharon and Zena) provided extra entertainment coming dressed in complete OTT outfits and wigs, not just dodgy shirts. Maxine even started Ben off with the first half of Ben's rendition of Mustang Sally. The tambourine got passed round the pub for the guests to provide the acoustics. The atmosphere was excellent and the night ended all too soon.

The winner takes it all!

Oh dear!

Watch out - or we'll av yer!

Where does the wallpaper end and the shirts begin?

Who's round is it?

Thanks to everyone who contributed in donating prizes, sponsorship and time, the players for enduring some adverse weather to compete, Wolfman for the evening entertainment, and of course Rossendale Golf Club for hosting the event.

The total raised by this event on the day is £1715.

Special thanks to the CIS who have doubled the sum raised on the day, making the final total £3430.

Rossendale Golf Club was founded in 1903 and opened as a nine hole course. The clubhouse was a converted cottage with golf played on agricultural land and amongst crops and farm animals. Through the years, the club developed with growing membership and now has a full 18 hole course measuring some 6293 yards with a par of 72. One of the notable junior members was Sam Torrance when at the age of six commenced his golfing career here at Rossendale. Development continues and a new clubhouse opened in April 2000.

The course is well laid out and maintained to high standards, providing golfers with an interesting round on meadowland with panoramic views of the surrounding Rossendale Valley.

Rossendale Golf Club is most easily approached by using the M66/A56 motorway and expressway which passes within half a mile of the club. Exit at the Haslingden / Helmshore sign northbound and the A681 Rawtenstall / Todmorden sign southbound.

Equipment purchased Jan 2001

UV- spectrophotometer

UV- spectrophotometerCost £2,006
Important piece of equipment central to all aspects of cancer research and will be used directly in research/clinical trials for ovarian cancer.

ELISA plate reader : Molecular devices Software and 415nm filter

Cost £871
This investment allows the machine to be upgraded to enable the development of assays underwriting a new treatment for several cancers including women with ovarian carcinoma based on immune delivery of bacterial superantigen. This activates killer T cells to lyse the tumour targets.
